HOW TO PLAY
Each chapter begins with a landscape illustration, a double-page photograph with the chapter information, and a short poem. From there, you'll find several pages of narrative text, interspersed with illustrations and puzzles. Start by reading the text on the page, then study the accompanying illustration and see what you can discover.
Each chapter consists of a series of steps – many are puzzles to solve, but some are simply choices to make or threads to follow. Typically, cach step will give you a piece of information that's used to solve the following step – this could be a symbol, a word, an instruction, or a visual clue about what to do next. The putput from one step is usually necessary to progress past the next, so do not ontinue reading through the chapter until you have resolved the current one. n later chapters, you may find this format deviates, with additional pages or a different ordering of steps. Keep in mind that there are no hidden puzzles in the opening poems, nor is every illustration part of a puzzle-some are purely decorative.
Aside from what is contained within these covers, you will need a pair of scissors and a pencil.
STORMLAMP ICONS:
Each chapter ends with a stormlamp icon. When you reach this icon, you should have a distinct word or phrase as the final chapter answer. Record your solution on the Incantation page (found in the satchel at the back of the book) above the corresponding chapter number-the length of the lines should help confirm your answer. Chapters are self-contained, so you will not need to use any previous chapters' answers until the very last puzzle in the book.
SATCHEL ICONS:
When a satchel symbol appears at the top of a page, it means the puzzle requires supporting materials. Open the satchel at the back of the book and take out the page with the corresponding letter. In some cases, this page duplicates an illustration that is visible in the book, but is part of a puzzle that requires you to physically interact with or manipulate the paper.
HINTS & SOLUTIONS:
If you get stuck and need a nudge in the right direction, or you want to check your solution, retrieve the red bookmark from the satchel and refer to the hints pages at the end of each chapter. Orient the bookmark horizontally on the hints page to read the text, and move it down line by line until you have enough information to proceed with solving. The last entry (next to the
stormlamp symbol) always reveals the solution to the chapter.
