Ngũ Điện: The Fifth Court is a thematic, asymmetric two-player game set in the Fifth Court of Buddhist Hell (Thập Điện Diêm Vương). In Vietnamese Buddhist and folk mythology regarding the afterlife, the underworld is divided into Ten Courts (Thập Điện), each governed by a judge-king. Ngũ Điện is the Fifth Court, presided over by Diêm La Vương (King Yama). It is famous in lore for housing Đài Vọng Hương (the Terrace of Looking Back Home), where souls look back at their living relatives one last time before receiving judgment.
In Ngũ Điện, players take on the roles of damned souls serving as Spirit Detectives to pay off their karmic debts. Sitting opposite one another across a shared timeline, both players compete to dissolve the trauma anchoring trapped spirits while proving their own transformative empathy to earn an auspicious rebirth (Luân Hồi).
Roles:
- The Echo of the Past (Cựu Ký Ty): Investigators in these roles operate at the historical origins of each tragedy, seeking to uncover the sources of trauma before the pain hardens into generational curses.
- The Horizon of the Present (Hiện Thế Ty): Players here investigate modern-day Vietnam, locating contemporary hauntings, assisting living descendants, and unearthing physical remnants to release lingering ghosts.
Gameplay Overview
The game centers on a grid of double-sided Chronicle cards featuring Vietnamese folklore and urban legends. While one detective investigates the historical root of a haunting, the other simultaneously faces its modern manifestation on the reverse side.
Each round, players draft from a shared pool of custom dice representing five distinct actions needed to unravel the knots binding each spirit. Resolving emotional milestones in the past triggers temporal ripples that unlock breakthroughs in the present, while spending the accumulated grace of King Yama allows players to activate his various talismans. Success requires balancing the past and the present along a tug-of-war on the central purification track to secure your soul's liberation.
