Lords of the South Slavs – Roll & Write is a roll-and-write game set in the late Middle Ages, a time when the Balkans were politically fragmented and increasingly threatened by Ottoman expansion. Players take on the role of independent Slavic rulers, each governing a growing city while attempting to strengthen regional influence and resist external pressure.
The goal of the game is to develop a prosperous city and secure dominance through a combination of influence, economic growth, and defensive preparations. Players score points by building grand structures and advancing along various development tracks.
Each round, players roll dice that determine which symbols are available. Using a personal player sheet, they allocate results to construct buildings, progress along various tracks, and manage limited resources. Because not all dice results are available to every player, each round involves competition over key symbols and timing. This shared draft creates tension between reacting to opponents’ choices and pursuing long-term strategic plans, while variable setups ensure that no two games play the same.
