The "Camino Primitivo" is the oldest route of the "Camino de Santiago". It winds through the mountains and valleys of Asturias and Galicia, following in the footsteps of the first royal pilgrim: King Alfonso II “El Casto.” Centuries ago, he set out to confirm that the remains discovered in Compostela truly belonged to the Apostle James.
In El Camino Mágico, 3 to 4 players relive that legendary journey. Each becomes a pilgrim traveling the Camino Primitivo from Oviedo to Santiago de Compostela, over the course of 13 stages—one for each round of the game. Each stage is divided into two phases: Day and Night. During the Day phase, you roll a weather die to determine how much energy (action points) you will have available for walking and visiting landmarks. At Night, you must find a place to rest. Your choice of accommodation—as well as how much energy you’ve spent in previous days—will affect how much energy you recover for the following stages.
Your goal is to finish the pilgrimage with the most Enrichment Points, earned through a variety of experiences along the way.
You gain Enrichment Points by:
- Visiting Landmarks: Along the route, pilgrims encounter remarkable places where they can choose to stop and visit. Each visit grants immediate Enrichment Points.
The first pilgrim to visit a site also claims its Landmark Card, divided in collections (architecture, gastronomy, landscape, folklore, or museums), worth extra points at the end of the game. However, every visit consumes time and energy—so choose carefully if you wish to reach Santiago in time!
- Meeting Other Pilgrims: The Camino is not just about the journey, but about the people you meet. At night, pilgrims choose an hostel to rest. Sharing the same hostel with others rewards additional Enrichment Points, symbolizing shared stories and fellowship.
- Reaching Santiago: Arriving in Santiago de Compostela before the end of the 13th stage grants a large reward. Those who don’t reach the city still earn points, but fewer, depending on how far they remain from the destination.
- Living Simply: Each pilgrim begins with a small amount of money for meals, massages, or hotel stays that restore health or energy. Spending wisely is key—but finishing the game with unspent coins also brings bonus Enrichment Points for an austere, humble journey.
- Health and Energy: Arriving exhausted or in poor health reduces your final score, as you cannot fully enjoy the spiritual reward of the journey. Managing your strength and maintaining balance throughout the 13 stages will grant additional Enrichment Points.
