The Battle of Bailén is a two-player historical simulation game that recreates one of the most important battles of the Spanish War of Independence. As part of the prestigious NAC History collection, it offers an accessible, dynamic, and deeply historical experience that will satisfy both new players and veteran military simulation enthusiasts.
Each game reenacts the decisive hours of the clash between Spanish and French forces, allowing players to take command of both armies and face the same strategic and tactical challenges that their historical commanders had to resolve.
Summer of 1808. The French imperial eagles dominate Europe. From the plains of Italy to the battlefields of Prussia and Austria, Napoleon Bonaparte’s armies have defeated the continent’s greatest powers one after another. The Grande Armée seems invincible, and no one imagines that its advance can be stopped.
Spain, officially an ally of France, finds itself in an increasingly tense situation. What began as a military operation intended to control Portugal ends up becoming an occupation of Spanish territory. The imposition of Joseph Bonaparte as king and the popular uprising of May 2nd trigger a war that will soon spread throughout the Iberian Peninsula.
In Andalusia, a Spanish army composed of regular troops, volunteers, and militias organizes to confront the French forces of General Pierre Dupont. Convinced of the superiority of his veteran soldiers, Dupont launches a campaign that should culminate in a swift victory. However, the Spanish generals had other plans. As the French columns advanced under the stifling Andalusian heat, the forces of Castaños, Reding, Venegas, and Coupigny maneuvered to isolate the invaders and force them to fight under unfavorable conditions. Little by little, both armies converged around the small town of Bailén.
On July 19, 1808, a battle breaks out that will change history.
For hours, the French infantry launches desperate attacks against the Spanish positions. Artillery shakes the battlefield. The cavalry seeks to exploit any weakness. Reinforcements march toward the fray, with no one knowing when they will arrive or what effect they will have on the final outcome. Much more than control of an Andalusian town is at stake. For the first time in the Napoleonic Wars, a French field army risks being defeated and forced to surrender. If Spain manages to hold out, the myth of Napoleonic invincibility will be shattered in the eyes of all Europe.
